Interaction design, which is how the product interface indicates what people should do when they click, tap, or slide on certain features; and how the interface should react to that user’s action. Classifying this relatively new role and saying what skillsets they should and should not have is very hard. It’s always changing, and every company has their own definition. Basically, in web development, there is a paradigm of dividing systems into two parts. Data operations take place here to answer requests sent from the client-side. This is where the User Interface is and requests are prepared. Why would you care about something as trivial as the look of your web application or webpage?

Each time you turn an assumption into a decision, you are risking the trust that the design team puts on you to implement the UI. This will show them that you care about the final result as much as they do. Once you start to pay attention to your surroundings, you’ll be better equipped to tackle problems. Get to know the business better and be willing to listen to what designers have to say. That will make you a team member with richer contributions to the project. Collaborating in areas beyond our expertise is the key to creating meaningful conversations and mutual trust.

This will make them understand the constraints of the web and, soon enough, they’ll recognize why a feature takes time to implement. Nowadays, it’s a joy to visualize layouts, debug CSS animations and tweak typography. Show them a ready-to-use code playground like Codepen for them to explore. They don’t need to know all CSS specs to understand how the layout paradigm works. However, they need to know how elements are created and behave in order to empower their daily work. How Frontend Developers Can Empower Designers Work

Maybe that means adding feedback to touch/click, maybe it means adding or removing a load screen, uncollapsing a hamburger button, cutting unnecessary fields/screens in a check out process. UX/UI doesn’t really need to code anything, just make the recommendations and let the front end dev or the back end dev make the changes. A designer shows the developers what the page/app should look like. They choose the colors, the borders, the button designs, the layout etc. This can be done on paper or in photoshop, whatever, doesn’t need code.

We just revamped our curriculum for the Software Engineering Intensive, and it’s now centered around a software development core , project-based learning, integrated workplace simulation , and career support. As UI/UX design fields are still very new, there aren’t many degree programs specifically designed for these roles. They can also help designers produce documentation and instructions in a language that developers understand–essentially working as translators.
